Community Gratitude Altar with a Potluck

Experience the transformative power of fire as you solidify your ceramic pieces through the ancient art of pit firing .

Part One: Preparation In-Studio
Date: Saturday, September 28th

Location: Artillery AG, 2751 Mission St.

Join local ceramic artist Haley Tessler for the first part of our pit fire workshop. In this preparatory session, Haley will guide participants through the process of creating vessels for pit firing. We will discuss the best forms to make and how to prepare your vessels using techniques such as terra sigillata and burnishing. This session will equip you with the skills needed for a successful firing day.

Part Two: Firing Day + Community Gratitude Altar with Potluck
Date: Saturday, October 12th
Time: 8:00 AM – Sunset
Location: Ocean Beach

Celebrate Latinx Heritage Month with us at Ocean Beach as we complete the pit firing process with Hayley and host a Community Gratitude Altar led by Kelly Ortega and Ivan Lopez (the stewards of Artillery AG) .

We’ll gather at 8:00 AM to begin the pit firing, with the day concluding when the fire burns down and the pots are ready to be retrieved. Ensure your pots are no larger than 6 inches in any direction and are bisque-fired to a lower temperature.

As part of our celebration, we’ll create a Community Gratitude Altar , where you can express thanks through offerings such as flowers, seeds, plants, or through words, songs, or poems.

Potluck: In honor of Latinx Heritage Month (September 15th - October 15th), we invite you to bring a dish that celebrates your favorite Latinx foods. Share a food item that represents you love and contributes to a diverse and vibrant potluck. Please consider dishes that are suitable for enjoying at the beach.

What to Bring:

  1. Pots: Ready for pit firing (maximum 6 inches, bisque-fired to a lower temperature).

  2. Potluck Dish: A special dish celebrating your favorite Latinx foods organized by Kelly Ortega. Bring your own utensils, cups, plates let’s keep it as plastic free as possible.

  3. Personal Offerings: Items for the Gratitude Altar if you wish to contribute. Flowers, seeds, candles, songs, poems, etc.

  4. Beach Essentials: Sunscreen, a hat, and a blanket or chairs for comfort.

Notes:

  • The firing schedule may vary, so be prepared for flexibility.

  • Ensure your potluck dish is beach-friendly and easy to share.

  • Prepare for beach conditions to stay comfortable throughout the day.

  • We will keep posted if weather does not permit for this activity & will re -schedule. For examples fires or rain.
